چکیده

Astragalus filipes Torr. ex A. Gray (basalt milkvetch or threadstalk milkvetch) is a legume that is widely distributed in western North Americaandholdspromise forrevegetationandrestorationprograms inthewesternUnitedStates.Seedof67accessionswascollected in2003 from Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, California, and Washington. Field-collected forage samples from these accessions had nondetectable or low levels of selenium, swainsonine, and nitrotoxins. Accessions were evaluated at Providence and Millville in northern Utah in 2005 and 2006. At Providence accessions from north-central Oregon exhibited comparatively high biomass yield in summer and fall during both years. Basalt milkvetchaccessionswith lowbiomassgenerallyhadhighcrudeprotein concentration.Acid-detergent fiber andneutral-detergent fiber were positively correlated with biomass yield (r50.42, P,0.0001; r50.57, P,0.0001, respectively). At Millville accessions from northcentral Oregon exhibited comparatively high biomass and seed yield. Seed weight per 100 seeds varied among basalt milkvetch accessions in bothyearsatMillville.PlantsatMillville treatedwith imadicloprid insecticidehadgreater seedyields thannontreatedplants in2006,butnot in 2005. When averaged across sites and years, a high correlation between number of stems and biomass (r50.82, P,0.0001) indicated that numberof stems isa reliablepredictorofhighbiomassandseedyield.Principalcomponentanalysisof sevenconsolidatedplant traits identified two principal components that accounted for 60% and 15% of the variation among accessions. The first principal component was negatively correlated with elevation (r520.71, P,0.01) and positively correlated with latitude (r50.46, P,0.01). The second principal component was positively correlated with elevation (r50.36, P,0.01) and negatively correlated with latitude (r520.47, P,0.01). These results are beneficial in identifying basalt milkvetch accessions that hold promise for plant improvement efforts.

CATTLE GRAZING WAHWEAP MILKVETCH IN SOUTHEASTERN UTAH la

Cattle 's grazing of the locoweed Wahweap milkvetch (Astragalus lentiginosus var. wabweapensis) was evaluated on desert and foothill winter range during the winter of 1986 to 1987. Dry, dead stalks of Wahweap milkvetch that had grown in 1985 and 1986 made up 15% of cattle diets overall, and 24% of diets when cattle grazed gravelly benches where it was abundant. Nutrit ional quality of Wahweap m...

Inhibition of ruminal cellulose fermentation by extracts of the perennial legume cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer).

Cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer L.) is a perennial legume used as a pasture or rangeland plant for ruminants. A study was undertaken to determine whether reported variations in its ruminal digestibility may be related to the presence of an antinutritive material. In vitro fermentation of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of cicer milkvetch by mixed rumen microflora was poorer than was the ferment...

Phylogeny and morphological traits evolution of Astragalus sects. Acanthophace and Aegacantha in Iran on the basis of nrDNA ITS and rpl32-trnLUAG sequences

In this study, phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary trends of morphological characters of Astragalus sects. Acanthophace and Aegacantha were studied using nrDNA ITS and rpl32-trnLUAG datasets while Astragalus stocksii was selected as the outgroup. The phylogenetic results indicated the non-monophyly of A. sect. Acanthophace in its current circumscription due to the distant exclusion of A...

Phylogeny of some species of Astragalus (Fabaceae) based on morphological data

The phylogenetic relationships among 39 species belonging to 12 sections of Astragalus from Iran were studied on the basis of 29 morphological characters. The cladistics analysis of the morphological data was performed using PAUP* 4.0b10 program. The obtained data were compared with the molecular systematics data obtained from nuclear DNA ITS. In contrast with previous molecular systematic stud...
